Samsung & KT trial 8K over the air

Samsung and KT (the former Korea Telecom) report they have successfully trialled broadcasting 8K signals using Ka-band frequencies from Korea’s Cheollian satellite and then re-transmitted the images terrestrially.
The pair say they used H.265 compression and DVB-S2x as the transmission method, and decoded the signals in HDMI real time and fed into a Samsung 82” QLED receiver. They told Korean journalists that it showed that 100 Mb/s transmission broadcasting was possible and commercially viable.
KT is already committed to using 5G frequencies for UHD and started with Seoul Broadcasting System’s morning live news programme. It tested the end-to-end system earlier this year.
