Leaked documents reveal Prime Video numbers
March 19, 2018
Internal documents obtained by Reuters have revealed insights into just how valuable Amazon’s original TV shows are to the online retail giant.
Amazon attributed five million Prime subscriptions and renewals to its TV shows during the period between 2014 and early 2017, which equates to around one-quarter of total signups, according to analyst estimates.
The documents also reveal that Amazon Prime had 26 million US customers in early 2017. By comparison, Netflix had about 55 million subscribers in the US in the last quarter of 2017.
Amazon also breaks down how much it pays per subscriber by investing in its shows. The Man in the High Castle, for example, cost Amazon $72 million, but attracted 1.15 million new subscribers, according to the documents. Other originals weren’t nearly as successful.
