iPlayer password login “within weeks”

As first revealed in September 2016, viewers of the BBC’s iPlayer service will soon have to register for an account and enter a password before viewing. Warnings announcing the change have now started to appear on the iPlayer – and a login will become compulsory ‘within weeks’.
The BBC has denied the move is part of a crackdown on TV licence fee evasion, but admitted that email addresses registered to an account may allow it to identify people using the service without paying.
“[It] isn’t about enforcing the licence fee, it’s about giving you a better BBC and helping you get the best out of it,” commented MyBBC launch director Andrew Scott, who added that the move would make iPlayer “more personal and relevant to you”.
