German cable operator Kabel Deutschland has started testing its super-fast broadband delivering 1.17Gbps downstream. The field trial in Hamburg is being conducted in partnership with Cisco. According to the company it has proved that it is possible to deliver speeds in excess of 1Gbps over an 862MHz HFC network.

KDG CTO Lorenz Glatz said that it would be several years before web applications and content could be accessed via 1Gbps services but that the growth in demand for bandwidth meant it was a question of when, rather than if, such services would be launched.
