AT&T switches on EchoStar’s spectrum

It was only on August 26th that AT&T agreed to buy EchoStar’s terrestrial 3.45 GHz wireless spectrum for $23 billion. But AT&T has capitalised on that investment in record time. AT&T says it has now equipped 23,000 of its cellular sites to take advantage of the valuable spectrum.
It means that some two-thirds of the US population can now access the improved coverage. Indeed, the change has happened before the deal has officially been approved by US regulators. AT&T has achieved this by using a short-term lease of the spectrum while it awaits regulatory approval.
The benefits for AT&T users are highly beneficial. Both 5G mobility and AT&T Internet Air fixed wireless access (FWA) customers are getting the benefit of the additional 3.45 GHz spectrum. According to AT&T, customers are starting to see download speeds up to 80 percent faster on its mobile service and 55 percent faster for AT&T Internet Air.
AT&T is determined to improve its overall connectivity. “We’ve put EchoStar spectrum to work on our network and our customers are already feeling the difference,” said AT&T Chief Operating Officer Jeff McElfresh.
This new spectrum makes America’s best overall network even better by unlocking substantial increases in speed and capacity for customers in more than 5,300 cities across 48 states, states AT&T.
