Reports suggest that Germany’s Bundeswehr army is on the verge of ordering 40 satellites to cover its Synthetic Aperture Radio (SAR) services. Synthetic-aperture radar is a form of radar that is used to create highly-detailed two-dimensional images or three-dimensional reconstructions of objects, such as landscapes.

Space Intel Report states that a recently established joint-venture between Germany’s diversified defence hardware provider Rheinmetall AG and Finnish radar satellite builder/operator Iceye Oy is on the verge of booking its first big contract with a 40-satellite order from the German military.

Germany newspaper Handelsblatt, on October 24th, quoted Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger as saying the contract calls for 40 satellites to be delivered to the Bundeswehr in the next two years.

The potential order has to be approved by the army’s procurement office as well as Germany’s parliament.
