Christopher Mintz-Plasse on London, playing bass, career longevity and, yes, McLovin

At MCM Comic Con, Hollywood actor Christopher Mintz-Plasse took some time away from the show floor to speak to the press and reflect on his career – which has seen him star in the likes of Pitch Perfect, Trolls, How to Train Your Dragon, Kick Ass and The Disaster Artist – and of course, as the iconic McLovin character in the seminal comedy movie Superbad.

On being back in London, Mintz-Plasse said the city is where he became an adult, noting: “Coming over here really made me become an adult. I was drinking a lot of Jack and Cokes, I got into one of my first relationships and I made my first action movie, so London and Kick Ass [which was filmed in London] really hold a special place in my heart.”

When quizzed on how it feels to still be young and active in the industry, Mintz-Plasse quipped: “I don’t feel young – I’m 36 – Superbad came out 18 years ago which is just f**king crazy to me. I was a child. And now I have knee pain!”

With regards to maintaining a string string of credits, Mintz-Plasse explained: “My colleagues at least in the beginning were Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Emma Stone, Bill Hader and Seth Rogan – and then afterwards there’s like Paul Rudd – so I’ve been very blessed to work with such incredible directors and talented actors who are all thriving. A big part of working consistently is working with those guys because they have put me in so many movies. Even last year Seth and Evan [Goldberg] put me in the their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TV show – just came and asked me to do a voice [Pigeon Pete] – which was great. And Jonah recently asked me to work with him which was a delight. And I might be working with those guys again in the future, who knows? So really I’m just so grateful that [I fell in with] the [Judd] Apatow crew and they’ve kept me employed for a really long time.”

With regards to the aforementioned, celebrated McLovin chracter, Mintz-Plasse admitted it’s something that still follows him around, noting: “Of course, of course. It happens quite often – which is funny because when I read the script when I was 17 years old and I was like ‘this isn’t that funny’ […] and well, the joke’s on me because it’s what I’m f**king remembered for. But that’s all to say without McLovin, without Superbad, I wouldn’t have had the career I had and truly it changed my life for the better.”

Looking ahead, Mintz-Plasse said he currently bass with the musician Ben Kweller, and will be touring with him in 2026 (“We’re trying to come over here in the UK. We’ll see.”), and added: “I’m doing a movie in November with Paul Walter-Hauser – who’s great – and we’ll start shooting that in a few weeks. But it hasn’t been announced yet so I don’t wanna be the first one to say anything and then get fired!”
