Synchronicity Films, Big Light Productions announce Blue Mountain

October 9, 2025

Synchronicity Films (The Tattooist of Auschwitz, Mayflies, The Cry) and Big Light Productions (Leonardo, The Man in the High Castle) are partnering on Blue Mountain, an ambitious character-driven drama created by writer Anita Vettesse (Grantchester, This Thing of Darkness, River City). The series, a Scottish neo-Western and epic family saga, follows multiple families locked in escalating conflict as they fight to hold onto their land, their legacy, and each other, threatened by ruthless developers and long-buried secrets.

Framed against the cinematic expanse of the Highlands, Blue Mountain explores themes of power, inheritance, and identity through generational shifts and competing interests. The series traces the unraveling and reformation of fractured family bonds in a landscape as beautiful as it is unforgiving.

Claire Mundell, CEO, Founder and Creative Director of Synchronicity Films, said: “We’ve been fans of Anita’s for a long time and we’re incredibly excited to partner with Frank and the team at Big Light on Blue Mountain –  a project that brings together our passion for character-driven storytelling, contemporary Scottish portrayal and a deep appreciation for the cinematic possibilities of the Highlands. Thoughtful co-productions like this allow us to bring rich, universal stories to life with authenticity, scale, and international reach.”

Frank Spotnitz, CEO and founder of Big Light Productions, commented: “Blue Mountain is exactly the kind of bold, emotionally resonant storytelling we love at Big Light. Working with Anita’s extraordinary vision, and alongside Claire and the team at Synchronicity, we’re creating something that feels both timeless and contemporary. The beauty of the Scottish landscape combined with the authenticity and complexity of Anita’s characters makes this a truly exciting project.”

Writer Anita Vettesse said of the project: “I’m hugely excited to be working with Big Light and Synchronicity on Blue Mountain. I’ve always wanted to write an epic family Western in the snow ever since moving from the city to the highlands. This vast landscape is the perfect backdrop to get under the skin of two deeply complex families bound by one historical traumatic event that’s bled into the present day.”

The project reflects both companies’ shared vision of developing premium, writer-led drama for global audiences while anchoring the narrative in a uniquely Scottish setting. Blue Mountain serves as an example of how strategic collaboration can come together in challenging times to elevate stories that resonate far beyond their borders.

Further announcements, including casting and distribution partners, will be made in due course.
