Space42, the Abu Dhabi-based satellite operator which also owns the fleet of Thuraya satellites, says its latest addition – Thuraya-4 – is now on station at 44.3 degrees East in its geostationary orbital slot following a period of testing following its launch in January 2025. Space42’s predecessor business was known as YahSat.
“Launched in January 2025, the geostationary orbit satellite expands secure L-band capacity that is essential for critical communications, provides faster speeds, and extends coverage across Africa, Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East. It enables the next generation of mobility and communication solutions,” said Space42.
Space42 says it now serves more than 150 countries and potentially reaching some 5 billion people globally.
Created as a result of a merger between Bayanat and Yahsat, Space42 is a SpaceTech company that seamlessly integrates satellite communications, geospatial, and artificial intelligence capabilities.
Space42 has a wide portfolio of services including YahLink, YahClick and Yahlive as well as its strong links with local government for highly-secure communications.
The new satellite fills a key gap which was created with a failure of Thuraya-3 in April 2024 (albeit working at 98.5 degrees East).
