Harmonic and Comcast are partnering to expand fibre broadband access as the Internet provider continues to expand its network into new markets. In 2024, Comcast expanded its network to more than 1 million new locations, with more than 1.2 million new locations planned by the end of 2025. Comcast is leveraging Harmonic’s cOS virtualised broadband platform and network edge devices as part of its efforts to deliver multi-gigabit symmetrical broadband with low-lag to residential and commercial customers across the US.

“We are rapidly expanding our network to new areas and by leveraging Harmonic’s cOS platform provides us with the flexibility to use fibre or extend our existing DOCSIS-based infrastructure to deliver critical connectivity to homes and businesses,” said Dan Rice, vice president of Access Engineering, Comcast. “Introducing multi-gigabit Internet with low lag will open up a new world of opportunities for these areas and our ecosystem of partners like Harmonic is instrumental in making that possible.”

The expansion of Comcast’s network enables rapid and cost-effective deployment of fibre-based services that seamlessly co-exist with coax-based offerings on the same virtualised broadband platform supporting cost-effective fibre rollouts to rural communities, including through BEAD-funded projects. Harmonic’s cOS platform provides Comcast with a converged solution for multi-gigabit services, simplifying operations, reducing costs and enabling the strategic deployment of the node-based remote switches and optical line terminals (OLT) that connect customers to Comcast’s network. These innovations are supported by Harmonic’s virtual Broadband Network Gateway (vBNG) and Jetty Remote Switch with Fin Remote OLT in Harmonic’s Ripple DAA node.
