Name of the Game documentary on Apple, Amazon
August 29, 2025
Kino Lorber has announces the digital VoD release of Name of the Game, an eye-opening documentary that delves into the underground world of Black male exotic dancing in South Central Los Angeles. Written and directed by William Forbes and Douglas Skinner, the film will be available on September 2nd on Apple, Amazon and Fandango.
In Name of the Game, audiences step behind the velvet curtains of an exhilarating—but little-known—scene that thrived from the late 1980s to the early 2000s. Legendary clubs like The Right Track, Tigers, and The Boom Boom Room became hubs for the emerging culture of dance, music, and art emanating from South Central LA.
Through intimate interviews and eye-popping performances, the film follows former and current male dancers and the women who supported them. Their stories trace how this subculture intersected with the early currents of hip hop, gang culture, and kung fu assassins.
Praised for its bold storytelling and electrifying visuals, Name of the Game premiered at the 2023 Mammoth Lakes Film Festival—where it earned the Audience Award for Best U.S. Documentary Feature—before rolling out with a theatrical roadshow starting August 8th 2025 in select cities, including after parties featuring live performances from the cast of the film in Brooklyn, Los Angeles, and Atlanta.
Now, with its release on VOD, Name of the Game reaches a wide digital audience, inviting viewers to experience the story “raw, unfiltered, and uncut.”
