Spain: RTVE scores World Cup 2026 rights

Spanish public broadcaster RTVE has acquired the TV rights to the Football World Cup 2026 for €55 million, according to El Mundo, after offering the highest bid to FIFA, ahead of private TV operators.

RTVE will share football matches from the World Cup with TV group Mediapro that will be able to launch its own channel to sell the rights to other platforms.

This is the latest RTVE´s move to gain access to key sports events at a cost of over €360 million from 2025 onwards. Among those rights are
Euro Cup 2028 (for €50 million), the Olympic Games in LA in 2028 (for €112 million), the Olympic Games in Brisbane in 2032, the Winter Olympic Games in Cortina D’Ampezzo in Italy in 2026 and the Winter Olympic Games in 2030 in the Alps in France. In addition, RTVE has the TV rights to the Spanish National Team from 2026 to 2028 (for €60 million), Nations League, Tour de France from 2026 and 2030 (for €20.6 million), the King’s Cup 2024-2025 (for €14.8 million), the finals of the European Championship 2025-2027 (for €7.5 million), and other TV rights to La Vuelta Ciclista in Spain, FIBA competitions and women’s football among others.

Meanwhile, DAZN and Mediaset have partnered to distribute the FIFA Club World Cup, in Spain and Italy this summer.  Mediaset will broadcast FTA one match per day whereas DAZN will offer all of the 63 matches.  Oscar Vilda, CEO of DAZN Iberia said that “this alliance is built on our relationship with Mediaset as strategic partner in Spain and Italy and strengthens our ambition as a global platform of achieving that the best club football is available to all. This unique experience in a cross-platform, digital environment, with high interaction and integration, will enable us to place football, its players, fans and brands on the centre of the action”.

The Club World Cup will start on June 14th in the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami with 32 of the best football clubs in the world playing across 12 venues in the US, with the final to take place at the MetLife Stadium in New York on July 13th.
