Satellite operator Lynk Global, working with Globe Telecom, has trialled what they claim is the first-ever emergency satellite connectivity service in the Philippines. The test included SMS messaging and emergency alerts to and from mobile phones.
The test took place during February in Bataan, a province of the Philippines, and used Globe Telecom’s terrestrial cellular service which by using the Lynk satellite was able to cover isolated and disadvantaged areas of the nation.
“Globe is exploring new satellite technology solutions to reach more people, especially in far-flung areas that do not have any terrestrial network coverage,” said Gerhard Tan, director/head of network strategy & technology enablement at Globe Telecom. He added: “There are still places within the archipelago where people can benefit from additional mobile coverage.”
James Alderdice, VP/Asia-Pacific at Lynk said: “At Lynk, we believe that people should be able to use their mobile phones to communicate no matter their location and no matter how remote. Our network of satellites that work as cell towers in space paves the way for Globe to enhance their mobile coverage of the Philippines.”
Lynk and Globe signed their agreement last year.
