The executive president of Telefónica, Jose María Alvarez-Pallete, has been elected as the new president of the GSMA, the organisation that represents more than 750 of the world’s mobile operators, as well as over 350 companies in the broader mobile ecosystem.
Álvarez-Pallete’s mandate will last until December 2022 and marks the first time that a president of a Spanish company has taken the post.

Álvarez-Pallete takes the helm “at a crucial time where connectivity and telco infrastructures have become extremely important and where the world is witnessing a new technological revolution,” noted the GSMA.
“I am very proud of joining GSMA as president. Technologies like AI, 5G, edge computing, cloud, cybersecurity and loT have redefined the way society interacts, paving the way for metaverso, web3 and the new digital era,” said Alvarez-Pallete.
