Vodafone loses football case against Movistar
July 31, 2019
From David Del Valle in Madrid
Spanish regulator CNMC has dismissed Vodafone Spain’s complaints over Movistar’s football promotions last summer. and put an immediate end to the proceedings.
Vodafone had filed two complaints accusing Movistar of abuse of a dominant position in the football TV market by trying to capture Vodafone’s football subscribers through a telephone campaign offering half-price fibre bundles including football. Movistar also launched a promotion effectively offering football for free.
The CNMC ruled that Movistar did not break the competition rules, and other operators including Orange also launched similar football promotions at the time.
Movistar is consolidating its leadership in terms of subscribers with 4,106,000 subscribers in the country versus Vodafone’s 1,287,000 and Orange’s 664,000.
