EC promises action on 5G security

EC Commissioner for the digital economy, Mariya Gabriel, has promised MWC the EC would address 5G net security issues: the industry is concerned that different approaches to Huawei and other suppliers by national regulators will slow 5G in Europe – already falling behind Asia and the US.
“I am well aware of the unrest caused by the ongoing discussions about Cybersecurity […] Europe has to have a common approach to these challenges and we must bring it to the table soon to avoid divergent decisions by neighbouring states.”
Ericsson CEO Borje Ekholm had pleaded with EC to address multiple 5G issues including security but also spectrum costs and licence durations. He said many countries were – as with 4G – discussing 60 per cent coverage compared with 90 per cent in Asia and the US. He added it was no wonder technology supply was being dominated by American and Chinese companies.
