€10m for CNC from OTT tax
February 26, 2019
From Pascale Paoli Lebailly in Paris
The so-called YouTube/Netflix video tax, imposed upon French OTT platforms since January 1st 2018, will bring a relatively small €10 million to film and TV funding body CNC.
Talking to daily Le Figaro, CNC president Frédérique Bredin said that compared to “movie theatres that will pay €140 million and TV broadcasters €290 million.” the contribution is small, but “the important [thing] was to integrate them into the cultural exploitation system.”
This 2 per cent tax is based on the revenues made in France since early 2018 and is applicable to all digital platforms like YouTube, Netflix and Prime Video, to help fund the production of local content.
Netflix has recently passed the 5 million subscriber mark in France, four and a half years after launching in the country.
