Spain: Telefónica sues Mediapro for football damages
September 18, 2018
From David Del Valle in Madrid
Telefónica has filed a lawsuit against TV company Mediapro over the closure of the channels Canal Abono Fútbol and Canal Abono Fútbol 1 to the benefit of beIN La Liga, owned by the media company.
The telco is demanding some €8.6 million compensation for the damages caused by the closure, according to El Economista. In particular, the lawsuit is against Total Channel, now called Mediaproducción, which is owned by Mediapro.
Mediapro already faced legal accusations from Prisa Group of illegally using the football TV rights owned at that time by Audiovisual Sport between 2007 and 2009 with a demand for €85 million damages, a demand still to be arbitrated in Court following an appeal by Prisa.
