Mediapro forced to open football rights to OTT platforms
February 15, 2018
From David Del Valle in Madrid
Spanish media company Mediapro, holder of the football TV rights, will open up its sports broadcasts to third party OTT platforms to avoid being fined by the CNMC for breaking competition rules.
Mediapro will provide the beIN Sports and beIN LaLiga sports channels to OTT platforms under the same terms and conditions as traditional operators.
Mediapro had been streaming the channels on OTT only through its own OTT platform, beIN Connect, but now it will offer the wholesale rights to other OTT services.
The move is the result of a complaint made by Obwan Networks and Services -which operates Opensport OTT platform – on the grounds that Mediapro was discriminating other OTT platforms hindering their development in the market.
