Spain: Football pay-TV battle moves to bars
August 4, 2017
From David Del Valle in Madrid
Spanish pay-TV operators are now in a fierce battle to gain penetration in bars and restaurants for a business valued at over €500 million a year.
Vodafone has reduced its pay-TV package including all football (La Liga, Copa del Rey, Champions League and UEFA League), Formula 1 and Moto GP to €150 (a €10 discount) for bars and restaurants. The company is targeting the 260,000 bars existing in Spain, more than in all of the US, where Spaniards traditionally watch football matches.
Rival Orange is offering its football package for €160 and Telefónica has a package for the same fee, but with more services and TV channels. Movistar Plus is offering two packages for €215 and €227, with convergent services.
