London-based satellite operator Avanti Communications has won a contract with Telkom Kenya. The deal sees Avanti install 1160 ‘Constituency Incubation Hubs’ on behalf of Kenya’s government.
The hubs are designed to provide learning centres for Kenya’s young adults and entrepreneurs to develop ICT skill and applications. There will be 4 hubs per constituency in Kenya, which has 290 parliamentary constituencies. The hubs will be equipped with a VSAT system, Wi-Fi router and computer tablets.
The hubs will connect to Avanti’s Hulas-2 satellite.
Avanti’s announcement does not mention the amount of satellite capacity needed to fulfil the contract, nor the length of time the contract is set to run, but any extra revenues will be welcome for the company which has recently undergone a financial restructuring.
