Cellnex launches cloud-based 4K platform

From David Del Valle in Madrid
Spanish broadcast infrastructure company Cellnex Telecom is launching a cloud-based 4K distribution platform as part of project called PLEASE.
The project aims to boost the development of UHD content by making a distribution platform available using a cloud-based system to support UHD TV resolution through the MPEG-DASH standard.
The platform will also use the H.265/HEVC system in the video encoding process, a format that is destined to replace the current H.264/AVC to support 4K broadcasting quality since it enables the same capacity in half the space.
The project is led by Cellnex Telecom (the former Retevision) with the collaboration of several groups such as Cires21, Sapec and the G@TV group from a Madrid University, and the financial support of the Ministry of Industry.
