Telefonica VoD on trains
October 28, 2015
From David Del Valle in Madrid
Telefonica is taking its Wi-Fi, online video and VoD services to the trains operated by the Spain’s public railway company Renfe. The first services will be available on high speed trains (AVE) between Madrid and Barcelona following an agreement between both companies.
With the technology company Indra, Telefonica will launch a content platform for mobile and connected devices, delivering live TV networks and films and series on demand, as well as e-books, newspapers, games and other entertainment products. Wi-Fi services will also be installed in two pilot train stations.
The cost of the whole operation is estimated at nearly €150 million with Indra building the infrastructure costing €20 million.
After the initial phase, Telefonica aims to extend the services to the whole high-speed train network, starting in 2017.
