TivuSat success explains Sky Italia struggle

Italian free-to-view DTH service TivuSat has added 275,000 net new subscribers during 2014, and taking its total to more than 2.3 million ‘active’ smart cards.
The broadcast platform says its numbers are the equivalent of some 1.9 million households, or more than 8 per cent of Italian TVHHs.
TivuSat’s success, in part, explains why Sky Italia is in the doldrums with 4.75 million subs, and making very slow progress. Indeed, Sky Italia’s subs numbers for its third-quarter (announced November 4th) fell by 21,000.
TivuSat offers al of Italy’s ‘free’ public and private channels from public broadcaster RAI as well as Mediaset (68 in total) plus another 32 audio channels. HDTV is also available from RAI as well as other broadcasters including the new ARTE channel which launched this week.
