August 28, 2013
By Colin Mann
Satellite operator Intelsat is teaming up with BT Media and Broadcast, Ericsson, Sony and Newtec to transmit the Saracens vs. Gloucester rugby union match live from London in 4K Ultra-HD to the RAI Convention Center at IBC 2013.
This will be the first time a live event has ever been captured in 4K/UHD, encoded, transmitted via fibre and satellite, and decoded in real time. Intelsat says the demo will show true 4K transmission: A 4:2:2, 10-bit, 4K/UHD signal at 60 frames per second.
The demo will take place Sunday, 15 September between 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Intelsat’s Stand: Hall 1, C71.
