TopTV gets ‘adult TV’ approval
April 26, 2013
Struggling South African pay-TV broadcaster TopTV has been granted permission to start transmitting 3 so-called ‘adult TV’ channels.
TopTV, owned by On Digital Media which is facing some financial challenges, was given approval to broadcast Playboy TV, Desire TV and Private Spice by the South African broadcasting regulator (ICASA) provided the broadcasts do not take place before 8pm of an evening, and end at 5am. Transmissions also have to be behind a double pin-code in order to safeguard children.
ICASA said: “The authority has also considered all submissions made in respect of this application from all interested stakeholders and it was found that most of the representations made were based on moral grounds, rather than research evidence to demonstrate some of the conclusive remarks linking pornography and gender-based violence. It is the authority’s view that indeed there is no basis or law for the rejection of TopTV’s application.”
