Harrods goes 4K and OLED crazy
March 10, 2013
Harrods, the iconic London department store, is awash with OLED and 4K displays. Its street windows are showcasing LG’s latest 55” OLED ultra-thin display – a snip at £10,000 (€11,500) a time – while its electronics department has another pair of the beasts on display, and available for pre-ordering. Harrods sales staff say they “are selling”, although the official line is that pre-orders are being taken for delivery in July.
Not to be outdone, Harrods also has some of Sony’s 84” Ultra-HD 4K (84X9000) displays on show. One is also showcased in its own Knightsbridge street window, while the electronics department has another (at £20,000 a pop). These units are, say staff coyly, selling extremely well. Singer George Michael has reportedly bought three of the beast, while the Sultan of Brunei has splashed out on six!
Besides LG and Sony, other manufacturers such as Samsung, Panasonic and Sharp are also showing their latest wares. Samsung’s 75” S9000 LED is selling at £7,500, while Toshiba’s Quad 4 x 1080p 55” costs £5,000.
