Satellite builder Space Systems/Loral has won a major order for two new satellites from Hong Kong-based AsiaSat. The two craft, AsiaSat-6 and AsiaSat-8 will be launched by early 2014. Loral built and delivered AsiaSat-5 in 2009, and AsiaSat-7 is currently awaiting a November 26 launch.
AsiaSat 6 will have an all-C-band payload and AsiaSat 8, will be equipped with both Ku-band and Ka-band transponders. The two satellites will serve Asia, the Middle East and Australasia and are designed using SS/L’s 1300 satellite platform.
This latest pair means that SS/L has won orders for a total of 6 satellites this year.
