iPlayer going global with subscription
June 14, 2011
The BBC will begin the process of introducing its international iPlayer to overseas audiences with iPads later this year. Users in western Europe will have to pay somewhere under €8 a month for the service.
Jana Bennett – president of worldwide networks and global iPlayer at BBC Worldwide – says the international version of the online video player will be “a different proposition” from its British equivalent, which showcases recent catch-up content only. “The freedom from catch-up means that we’ve got a lot more flexibility in terms of what we put on there and how we present it”, with the BBC aiming to put together collections of programmes covering genres such as music, comedy, documentaries and natural history.
