India’s Videocon d2h pay-TV operator says it will be phasing out its standard-definition set-top boxes over the next year or so.

Videocon d2h CEO Anil Khera, speaking at the Asia-Pacific Video Operators Summit (APOS), said that the extra cost of manufacturing its HD STBs was just an extra $1 or so. There is also a general trend towards HDTV channels in India, having grown over the past 5 years from just 3 to more than 34 currently.

Videocon d2h also introduced Ultra-HD services at the end of January.

Khera said he expected the current HD channel offering to expand to “at least” 100 over the next 12-18 months.
