The ‘power supply anomalies’ suffered by Hispasat’s Amazonas 4A satellite looks likely to affect 50 per cent of the craft’s working capacity and result in an insurance claim for about half of the satellite’s value, according to informed sources.

The problem has been identified as being a failed power subsystem related to the supply of electric power to the electronic equipment on the satellite.

The satellite itself was insured for €145 million ($199m). Industry sources suggest a precise insurance claim has yet to be made and the final assessment will take into account the overall effect the power supply damage will have on the planned 15-year anticipated life of the satellite.

Amazonas 4A was built by Orbital Sciences and launched on March 24th for positioning at 61 degrees West.
