BBC unveils “summer of 3D”
July 3, 2012
The Last Night of the Proms is to be broadcast in 3D for the first time. The live Royal Albert Hall broadcast on September 8th is part of a promised “summer of 3D” on the BBC which will also include the first three-dimensional take on BBC1’s Planet Dinosaur.
The finale to the BBC’s two-month proms season will be given an extra dimension courtesy of eight specialist cameras including one in front of the conductor. A remote camera within the orchestra promises to give audiences the feeling that they are “actually in the orchestra, with a 3D view of every individual instrument”.
Planet Dinosaur will air in August, with the shows broadcast in 3D on the BBC’s HD channel, part of a two-year 3D trial.
Parts of the BBC’s Wimbledon’s coverage will also be broadcast in 3D, including selective live coverage of the finals and reruns of the semi-finals.
Additionally the Olympics’ opening and closing ceremonies will be broadcast in 3D, as well as the men’s 100m final and a daily highlights package.
