SpaceX Starship targets August 24 launch

August 18, 2025

SpaceX has said that its Test Flight #10 of its massive Starship is officially targeting August 24th for its launch from its Starbase in South Texas. Weather and other external events may delay the launch.

Elon Musk’s space company says that it has removed one of the key landing fins used to guide the Super Heavy booster rocket back to Earth. The next generation rocket will instead feature three grid fins that are stronger and 50 per cent larger than previous versions.

SpaceX also revealed the results of its post-launch analysts of its Test Flight #9 and the explosion of its Ship 36 static flight anomaly. SpaceX said: “Methane leaked from the main tank into the nosecone, which caused elevated pressure inside the nosecone. Venting of the nosecone then resulted in an off-nominal attitude. Eventually liquid methane reached the nosecone, which triggered passivation.”

The company’s ninth flight test in May 2025 ended in a fiery disintegration during re-entry, while a subsequent static fire test of a Starship upper stage exploded on the pad, delaying progress.

Despite four successful launches out of nine, fixes like reinforced seals have earned FAA approval for the 10th test. With the FAA’s green light, SpaceX is cleared for its 10th flight test. This comes after federal regulators approved operations following debris concerns from earlier mishaps near populated areas.

It is worth remembering that Musk’s Starship is the most powerful rocket ever assembled and capable of carrying up to 150 tonnes into orbit.
