Japanese technology conglomerate SoftBank is working with OneWeb – in which it has a major stake – to use satellites to support and control self-driving vehicles in Japan.

SoftBank says they are installing more than 3300 points at base stations throughout Japan which can provide what is described as centimetre-level accuracy. Testing starts in July.

The system will use signals from Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) to conduct real-time kinematic (RTK) positioning, which uses fixed and mobile stations to receive signals.

Following tests SoftBank says that it hopes the full system will be in use by the end of November.
