Spain: Orange foots the football bill
July 24, 2018
From David Del Valle in Madrid
Vodafone’s refusal to buy Telefónica’s football TV rights will have a severe financial effect upon Orange Spain which decided to acquire them.
Orange Spain will have to pay an additional €80 million per season to Telefónica to mitigate the lost money from Vodafone’s absence, according to El Economista. In total, Orange Spain will pay €240 million for the three seasons.
To make the investment profitable, both Telefónica and Orange might now increase their fees for subscribers. Both operators will now attempt to attract Vodafone’s subscribers to their respective platforms.
