Russian authorities have retaliated against the US requirement that RT (Russia Today) be registered as a ‘foreign agent’ within the USA, by enacting similar rules against two US-funded broadcasters.

Radio Liberty/Radio Free Europe and Voice of America (VOA) have been designated as “foreign agents”. Russia has made it clear that the move is in direct retaliation to the US treatment of Russia Today.

Russian parliamentarians say that the two radio services – both of which have bureaus in Moscow – are part of an alleged wider attempt by the ‘West’ to distort the truth of what is happening in Russia.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty has 7 outlets in Russia, and all are included in the new designation.

Part of the consequences are that journalists from RFE/RL and VOA could be banned from entering the Duma parliament building in Moscow.
