Colombian authorities have reportedly hit América Móvil and Telefónica’s Movistar with a 4.7 trillion Pesos (about $1.55bn) fine for alleged unauthorised use of the country’s public infrastructure.

Journalist Alan Burkitt-Gray, writing in Capacity & Global Telecoms Business, says that the Colombian authorities are willing to accept further negotiations as to the payment period. Otherwise the penalty has to be paid this week by August 15^th.

América Móvil has to pay two-thirds of the fine.

However, the journal reports that Telefónica is seeking leave to appeal claiming that the penalty violates agreements in place between Spain and Colombia.
