Nigeria says it needs 30 million set-top boxes in order to cover the country with Digital Terrestrial TV.

The Nigerian Broadcasting Commission says it has made a start by buying 650,000 units – worth $26 million – for the initial stage of the country’s adoption of digital TV.

NBC’s director-general Mallam Isha’q Modibbo Kawu, quoted by Nigeria’s Daily Trust newspaper, said the boxes would be made available to the public at the subsidised rate of NGN 1,500 (about $4.80).

Kawu added that a pilot distribution was already underway in parts of the country, and was being extended to six other states in the country. He further explained that in most areas viewers might have had access to four or five TV stations, and following digital implementation this would rise to around 15 stations.
