Eurovision News unites broadcasters to deliver reporting on Gaza famine
August 28, 2025
Multiple EBU Members have delivered a complex journalistic collaboration to report on the hunger and hardship in the Gaza Strip.
Coordinated by Eurovision News, the group of public service broadcasters pooled expertise and resources on the ground to document the realities of life in Gaza, where the Israeli authorities are prohibiting international news media from working.
On August 15th, the UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) declared a famine in the enclave, which UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk said was a direct result of Israeli Government action.
The footage and interviews in Gaza were gathered by local Palestinian journalists who are themselves enduring the severe shortages of food, medicine and other necessities, as well as the dangers of the war.
By filming over three weeks in August using the same technical and editorial standards, then coordinating their release, EBU Members simultaneously reported unfiltered facts about a major news story gathered under the harshest conditions.
EBU Director of News Liz Corbin credited the unique collective strength of the Eurovision News community, which underpins this collaborative project, and thanked the journalists who made it possible despite great personal risk and daily hardships. She added: “I can’t overstate the courage and commitment of the journalists – most of them Palestinian – who captured these stories so all our Members could share them with millions of people internationally. Their reporting demonstrates the vital importance of having journalists on the ground to witness and record the facts, especially when they don’t match the official narrative.”
The EBU has repeatedly demanded Israel allow unrestricted access to Gaza for foreign journalists, and notes that 29 countries have now signed a Media Freedom Coalition statement making the same call.
