Mediapro strike puts La Liga TV matches at risk

Around 800 workers from Mediapro – the Spanish production group responsible for broadcasting La Liga and La Liga 2 – have been called to strike during the final match days of the season, putting TV transmissions at risk.
Trade Unions have warned of the fact that the Swiss company HBS, the new producer of La Liga, is not guaranteeing jobs for the existing staff, resulting in a strike being called from May 13th to May 27th.
The strike could affect the final three TV matches of the season in La Liga, and the last two in the second division.
“We want a signed, binding agreement before the end of the season that guarantees no loss of rights or working conditions. We also demand a commitment that no mass layoffs (ERE) will be carried out once the season starts,” explained CGT, the majority union at the Barcelona workplace.
This union is calling the strike at Sociedad Europea de Unidades Móviles, SLU — better known as Eumovil — which employs 450 of the 800 people currently working for Mediapro-affiliated companies involved in La Liga broadcasts.
“We cannot accept that HBS, which will be making a huge profit from La Liga, is unable to guarantee the jobs of over 800 workers,” CGT said. They also point fingers at Mediapro, saying: “For years, they’ve made huge profits at the expense of precarious working conditions; today, some camera operators earn 150 euros gross per match — the same as 20 years ago.”
With the strike, the unions aim to secure guarantees that the entire workforce will be able to continue working under any scenario, whether through staff transfers, outsourcing, or other employment arrangements, given the uncertainty surrounding the continuation of services for La Liga. They are also demanding the preservation of labour rights.
CGT added that many workers are currently in very precarious and unstable situations, with intermittent permanent contracts that, in many cases, fall outside legal regulations
