Law&Crime announces coverage of CNN defamation trial
January 6, 2025
Legal and true crime network Law&Crime will serve as the sole pool camera in the major trial of Zachary Young vs CNN, scheduled to begin at the 14th Judicial Circuit Court in Panama City, Florida this week.
The cable news network faces civil claims of defamation stemming from a news report that allegedly implied that a security contractor with ties to the US Navy took inflated payments to evacuate citizens of Afghanistan on the brink of the US military’s 2021 withdrawal. The contractor, Young, claims CNN falsely portrayed his activities as illegal, including through the use of the term “black market” in an onscreen graphic featured in the segment, which was later removed.
Meanwhile, CNN claims in court filings that the case is built on secondary issues rather than the accuracy of the report, and that “few things are more common in newsrooms than journalists using tough and indignant language to refer to persons whose misdeeds they believe they are in the process of exposing.”
Law&Crime was appointed pool by the court and live courtroom coverage can be found on its YouTube channel.
