France Telecom for Digital Plus?
August 14, 2008
Speculation is increasingly mounting in Spain about France Telecom’s interest in acquiring Sogecable’s pay-TV unit, Digital Plus. The telco joins names such as Rupert Murdoch, Carlos Slim and Telefónica, among others, as being linked with the operation.
Sogecable’s approach to France Telecom-controlled IPTV service Orange TV with the recent launch of a triple play offer, Yacom+, even cheaper than Telefónica’s Imagenio proposition, has led observers to suggest a possible deal with the French company to acquire Digital Plus.
Yacom+ currently numbers almost 100,000 subscribers against Imagenio’s 575,000. On the other hand, according to the Spanish Market Telecommunications Commission (CMT) the number of broadband connections in Spain has grown by 16.3% over the last year reaching more than 8.6 million, 19 broadband connections in every 100 inhabitants. New broadband clients are increasingly taking on triple play offers, with Internet, telephony and TV.
