YouView could incorporate Google
October 21, 2010
From Colin Mann in London
Search giant Google would be free to create a Google search engine app on YouView, according to the open IPTV platform’s Chief Technology Officer, Anthony Rose. He told delegates at the Screen Digest Future of Digital Media Distribution Conference that he was not convinced that the recently-announced Google TV keyboard produced by Logitech was an ideal solution for content search and discovery. “It will quickly be replaced by something that’s more easy to use,” he predicted.
He also suggested that the price of YouView conformant set-top boxes would reduce over time, following initial launch with high-end devices. “You need a high aspirational base, otherwise you’re left with a product that’s behind the times,” he explained. “In a couple of years, it will be very cheap and very basic,” he predicted, drawing an analogy with DTT platform Freeview.
