Japan’s public broadcaster NHK has said that each member of its executive board will “voluntarily” return part of their executive salary and compensation because of their failure to properly supervise a NHK subsidiary.

The scandal, the latest to hit the broadcaster, is centred on a 200 million yen ($1.8 million) embezzlement case at NHK Integrated Technology. Staff at the offshoot were accused of misappropriation of funds, and fired.

NHK says that its overall president, Katsuto Momii, will return 50 per cent of his compensation for two months while five other executives will give back 30 per cent for a two-month period. Six others will also return 10 per cent for two months.

“There was a problem with our internal controls and we hold ourselves responsible,” Momii said in a statement offering an apology to the public.
