Cable TV industry players in Japan are joining forces to offer a national channel dedicated to 4K Ultra-high definition programming set for launch in December, according to Nikkei.

The 39 initial participants include J:COM and KDDI, with the aim of expanding this to some 370. The Japan Cable and Telecommunications Association is calling for content providers, with more than 110 so far expressing their intention of participating.

Japan Digital Serve, whose investors include railway operator Tokyu and J:COM, is set to handle the programming mix. The shows will be transmitted via a platform of JapanCableCast, allowing the cablecos to focus on content production.
