Spain’s public broadcaster RTVE has announced the upcoming launch of ARTE España, a new cultural television channel developed in partnership with the renowned European network ARTE.

Set to debut in late June, the project will be led by journalist Ana Peláez under RTVE’s newly created Arts and Knowledge division. The launch comes at a pivotal moment for Spain’s audiovisual sector, coinciding with the reorganisation of DTT and the allocation of new national broadcasting licences.

The initiative is underpinned by RTVE’s strong financial position, having reported an operating surplus of €55 million for the 2025 financial year. This surplus enables the corporation to align itself with successful public broadcasting models in countries such as France and Germany, offering a permanent platform for cultural content sometimes overlooked by mainstream schedules.

ARTE España will focus on a wide-ranging cultural remit, including classical music, opera and theatre. It will also revive popular formats such as Estudio 1 for modern audiences, blending heritage programming with contemporary presentation.

The channel’s schedule will be built around five core pillars designed to promote cultural excellence. These include archival Spanish cinema, curated thematic cycles, a slate of international documentaries, and performances by the RTVE Symphony Orchestra and Choir. In addition, collaboration with Radio 3 will ensure coverage of emerging musical trends, striking a balance between tradition and innovation.

The rollout will take place in two phases. Initially, ARTE España will launch as a digital offering, available via RTVE Play and the broadcaster’s online platforms. This will be followed by its transition to linear free-to-air broadcasting on DTT, supported by the DVB-T2 standard, enabling UHD picture quality.

The announcement comes amid a competitive public tender for a new 15-year national DTT licence, attracting bids from players including Mediaset and private consortia. Through this initiative, RTVE aims not only to expand its domestic offering but also to strengthen its role in European co-productions as a key Spanish partner.

Rather than positioning ARTE España as a niche outlet, RTVE intends for the channel to become a cornerstone of Spain’s audiovisual ecosystem, ensuring free access to high culture for a broad audience.
