News Corp’s Carey: Anti-piracy message ‘twisted’

News Corp Chief Operating Officer Chase Carey has suggested that the debate surrounding proposed anti-piracy legislation became twisted as media companies failed to see what he described as the “viral aspect” to the issue.
“Clearly this got turned upside down, the whole issue,” Carey said at the ‘Dive Into Media’ conference hosted by website All Things D, which is owned by News Corp. Although the proposed legislation – the Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect IP Act – look increasingly unlikely to proceed, Carey suggested that “at least we have a dialogue now,” with “wide agreement” that intellectual property was important. “If you look at what went on, you’d say that was not a process to replicate,” Carey asserted. “The creative community didn’t anticipate “the viral aspect and message getting twisted.”
Carey noted that media companies face the challenge of embracing new technologies and different ways of media distribution, while trying to protect their business models.
