German army proceeding with satellite plan?

September 26, 2025

There are reports that the German army (Bundeswehr) is lining up its strategy to develop its independent satellite constellation. The costs will reportedly be around €12 billion.

The commitment is key and could impact the Europe-wide IRIS2 mega-constellation. Germany has frequently said it is now wholly in favour of the European scheme.

Earlier details suggested that Germany wanted a Mid-Earth orbiting (MEO) fleet of between 12 and 24 satellites, and to be ready for operation by 2032. The IRIS2 constellation, which is also intended to be super-secure in terms of its transmissions, is planned to be ready by the end of this decade.

A 2024 presentation by the Bundeswehr talked of its “MEO own solution… autonomous, owned constellation”.
