September 11, 2025

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is going to be hitting HBO in 2026. The story is going to follow Aegon V Targaryen and Ser Duncan the Tall. It is based on the Dunk and Egg books by George R.R. Martin, and takes place a century before Game of Thrones.

The Monumental Success of Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones has experienced an unparalleled level of success over the years. House of the Dragon, which was set 200 years before Game of Thrones, had 8.9 million tune in for the series two finale. There have also been numerous games based on the popular television show. Reigns: Game of Thrones is a mobile and PC game that allows you to take control of characters that range from Tyrion to Sansa and Daenerys. It allows you to explore what-if scenarios, so you can forge your own story. There are also Game of Thrones slots that you can play that focus on the core themes of the television show. The slot game allows you to choose your house, which will then offer you benefits across different rounds. You can go to a full-red wedding with 150 coins, showing how well the story can be tied into numerous genres and verticals.

With the show experiencing immense success over the years, and fans calling out for more Game of Thrones-themed stories, it makes perfect sense that HBO intends to release a new television show based on the original series.

The Story behind A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
The story follows Dunk, who is lined up to be the commander of the Kingsguard, and Egg, who is Aegon V Targaryen. The story takes place 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones. Aegon V Targaryen is the grandfather of Aerys II, otherwise known as the Mad King. Although some of the information is being kept under wraps, we do know that Peter Claffley is serving as Ser Duncan the Tall. Dexter Sol Ansell is going to be playing Aegon V Targaryen.

It’s been announced that there are going to be a total of six episodes within the first series, but no specific date has been announced yet. It was expected to launch in 2025, but the series has been delayed and is now set for early 2026.

George R.R. Martin, who also has other spinoffs in the works according to ScreenRant, has announced that he has seen the first season and that he’s very pleased with it. He thinks it hits all of the right markers when it comes to a good fantasy story, and the two characters in this show are particularly special to him. He says that although they are unusual and might not be what you first expect, they help to add another dimension to the series. It’s anticipated that there are going to be three series in total, with the cost being significantly lower than Game of Thrones. The total cost is $10 million per episode or less, which is significantly lower than both House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones.
