Venezuela has selected the Japan/Brazilian ISDB-T variant for its digital terrestrial TV broadcasts. President Hugo Chavez has now signed off on the project which allows local set-top box production to begin.

Chavez received a high-profile delegation last week led by Argentina’s Minister of Infrastructure, Julio de Vido, who showed the Venezuelans examples of set-top boxes, TV sets and tablet devices that work with ISDB-T transmissions.

The Argentine DTT plan includes the development of a state-owned national platform over which at least 15 public channels will be developed as part an offensive move against private communication groups. Chávez might emulate this model that matches his strategy.

President Chávez stated:  “The setting up of that facility here in Bolívar state has already been passed”. Chávez also proposed that Argentine officials train Venezuelan technicians for the deployment of these technological projects in Venezuela. At present, Venezuela sells Argentina oil and liquid gas to support the country’s economic boom which is currently recording an 8 per cent annual growth rate.
